Do you ride without a lid in helmet law states? If so why? If not why not?
When I ride I decide even in states like North Carolina where riding without a lid may result in a moderate fine. Below is a picture of me lidless in downtown Asheville.
yes,lidless . i am responsible as in i have coverage so no state picks up my bill IF>>>. it is my right to choose how i ride.however. i have a couple of times donned a unofficial lid due to respect of others that were paranoid of the attention in areas of heavy survience. and.. i have also split and met up later when the riding was just to good to lid it. and others were nervous.
F*#k the helmet law. I have a skin lid and wish NJ didnt have a helmet law. I go to PA a lot and leave the lid at a bar I know till I return to NJ. No I dont get drunk and ride but a beer sure does hit the spot. Choice and Freedom is our country belief yet were told how to do everything. Cops that give the tickets are the same ones without a vest on yet they get shot at. Figure that at, if I were a cop I would wesr a vest.
Never wear a lid unless it is the law. Then the lid I wear is not legal. It should be my choice. I don't think it will help if I go down unless it's in a parking lot.
I always have a helmet on, full coverage. It may not help but It's my choice. I don't feel there needs to be a law for it. I worked 5 years on a rescue squad. Had all to many times picking up riders on the interstate. It may not help but you do have a better chance. Worst one we pulled the bike out from under the front of an 18 wheeler, the biker though he could cut a semi off, bad choice. The way you ride will make the most effect on if you are safe.
Since I started this thread I managed to get a ticket in Cherokee during the fall rally. However I did ride away from the traffic stop lidless and plan to go back and fight the ticket soon.
I'm also aware of the hard work Doc, ABATE of FL, and bikers of Florida did to change the lid law in gator country. By the way I'm a life member of ABATE of FL.
Here in N.Y. one has to wear a helmet. Next door in C.T. there is no helmet law. Soon as the bikers get off that ferry into CT the lids come flying off.
N.Y. will never abolish the helmet law. Too many azzholes here. Oh well.

Great topic, and thanks for bringing it up. I live in Florida, and for years we (a lot of bikers and others) rode to the state capital to protest the helmet law here. Well, finally we got it changed, and now we have the right to decide for ourselves. I don't wear a helmet myself, and here's why: When I did wear one, it was one of those plastic "skull caps" that wouldn't protect you from anything harder than an egg. I never thought I was protected, but it served it's purpose and kept the cops off my a**. I do own a very nice DOT helmet, with a 95 Snell rating. I'm sure that in some instances that helmet might help, or even save my life. The interesting thing is, as I sit here writing this, I've got some nice road rash and some very sore ribs. After all those years of riding down here, my luck finally ran out and I was rear-ended this past Saturday night. My head never came anywhere near the concrete. I was glad that I had jeans on though, because they were shredded but saved the skin on my a** and legs. My arms were bare of course, wearing only a t-shirt, and that's where the road rash came in. I've read numerous studies and they all say pretty much the same thing. The majority of motorcycle fatalities are due to massive trauma to the chest...not the head. And of course there's the old "it's my life and I'll do with it as I see fit". Same with seat belts. If I want to wear one, I will, if not I won't. I have plenty of insurance, so nobody is paying if I get hurt but me. So I say if you want to let the breeze blow through your hair, do it. If you feel better with a lid on...wear it. It's your life, and you're entitled.
